Biography

Latvian mezzo-soprano. Born in Riga into a family of musicians, she studied first in Riga, then in Vienna and the United States. She gained recognition after performing at the Salzburg Festival in 2003 in Mozart's 'La clemenza di Tito' in a production by Martin Kušej, singing the role of Annio. In 2006, she appeared in the same production as Sesto. In 2007, she made her debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (London) as Dorabella ('Così fan tutte'), later performing the roles of Romeo ('I Capuleti e i Montecchi') and Carmen there.

In 2008, the singer made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Rosina ('Il barbiere di Siviglia'), and in 2010 she appeared there as Carmen. Her repertoire also includes: Leonora ('La favorite'), Sara ('Roberto Devereux'), Marguerite ('La Damnation de Faust'), Didon ('Les Troyens'), Charlotte ('Werther'), Santuzza ('Cavalleria rusticana'), and Octavian ('Der Rosenkavalier').

She has an extensive discography, including several solo albums, and is a four-time recipient of the ECHO Klassik award. She holds the honorary title of Kammersängerin of the Vienna State Opera.
