Rosetta Cucchi, a visionary director whose bold and contemporary vision makes classics sound new, will personally present the performance to the audience of the TheatreaHD Opera Club in GUM and talk about her concept, where the central message is the theme of male violence against women, making this opera relevant for today's audience.
Dmitry Korchak, a world opera star, an outstanding tenor, a master of bel canto, whose performance of the part of Rodrigo became one of the main events of the Rossini Opera Festival, will also talk to the guests of the evening. The story of Gioachino Rossini's OTELLO is a striking departure from the conventional narrative. In this version, set in Venice, Desdemona lives in her father's home, secretly married to Otello—a fact hidden from both her father and her intended fiancé. This adaptation was so beloved by Italian audiences that, to avoid a sorrowful ending, 19th-century productions would sometimes conclude on a joyful note!
Yet this is unmistakably a drama, though conceived through Rossini's brilliant lens: think virtuosic coloratura passages, electrifying ensembles that push vocal limits, and irresistibly captivating characters. Among them is Desdemona's rejected fiancé, sung by the superb Dmitry Korchak. His character is determined not to be overshadowed by the Moor—neither in dramatic intensity nor in the sheer artistry and beauty of his part. The fatal clash between these two jealous rivals will be absolutely explosive!
